Breast
reduction:
WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION:
In connection with shape of breasts there are very many operational
methods of removing excess of the mammary gland. The safety limit
for breasts reduction is ca 40-50%. Breast reduction and breast
lifting procedures aimed at achieving desirable size and shape of
breasts are performed under general anaesthesia. During the operation
excess of skin, subcutaneous tissue and the mammary gland are cut
out and breasts are given a new shape by suitable suturing of remaining
tissues. After thegland has been modelled the excess of skin is
removed and nipple-aureola complex reduced in size sewn in. Before
suturing the skin drains are inserted in wounds to prevent occurrence
of haematomae. The skin margins are then joined together with delicate
stitches.
WHAT
ABOUT RECOVERY:
Patient stays in hospital for 3-5 days after the surgery. Finally
the stitches are taken out ca 10-14 days after the procedure.
WHAT
ABOUT CONVALESCENCE:
The convalescence can take up to a few weeks. Special elastic garments
and massages are recommended during the convalescence period. Resuming
work is possible ca 10-14 days after the surgery. Excessive efforts
or sports activities should be avoided for some time.
